We finished the story that we started last time. In groups you identified the four aspects of plot in the story and wrote them down in your notebook under "craft."
We did WTL #4 before starting the story, "Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket" in our textbook. We did not get through the story, we will finish it, and complete our plot analysis next time.
I showed the attached powerpoint in class on the Literary terms associated with Plot. Please make sure you have these in your writer's notebook under literary terms. Remember, I want the definitions in your own words, not in my words. Then we watched a couple of commercials in class. Under your plot notes in your notebook, you identified the four parts of plot in each of the commercials. Plot Powerpoint Honesty Commercial I handed back your papers from the previous week. We talked about what should be in your notebook for the upcoming notebook check (up to #6 - the 1-paragraph paper). Today was the last day to hand in your one-pager for November.
In your "craft" section of your notebook, you completed your 1-paragraph research paper in class. 1. Read the article "Selfies: Your 2013 Oxford English dictionary word of the year." 2. Write a 1-paragraph reflection in MLA format. 3. Make sure you have 2 quotes with lead-ins and that the quotes are relevant to your content. Cite the quotes using MLA format. Create a works cited page.
Make sure your table of contents is up-to-date. Selfie Article We watched a video about how to quote sources in your reflection. I read a few AOW responses that used quoting effectively. We then read the article, "Don't panic over Butterball's Thanksgiving turkey shortage" together and I composed my 1-paragraph research paper in front of the class about Sangsgiving. You will complete your 1-paragraph research paper next time. Quote Demo Career Exploration took the first half of class (in the writing lab with the counselor). You completed and turned in your WTL3 Madlib. We did our EDvisory today (to be every late start day from here on out). You have until next time to turn in your AOW3s revised for full credit.
We finished taking notes on the 8 parts of speech. We came up with a story (as a class) about Tayler and Thor and a pit of snakes to label the parts of speech. We didn't have enough time to do our WTL and mad-lib activity
I passed back your theme and characterization worksheets, along with your hero's journey assignment. If you need to revise for points, have it to me by next time. We did WTL#2 and started talking about the 8 parts of speech. We will continue our conversation next time.
I went over MLA Basic format via video and discussion. You can find the video (or a version of it) in the MLA section of my website. Also, today was EDvisory. If you missed your opportunity to meet with me during class, as usual I am available almost every day until 4:45.
We organized our notebooks and added our first WTL in the writing section. The sections of the notebook are as follows: Table of Contents, etc.
WTL #1: Tell me everything you have learned/remember about MLA format. Once you have written down everything you can remember, write down why you think we use MLA format to write our papers. "This is now the third time I have done a WTL about MLA. I don't think I have thought of anything else, oh yeah, transitions. I think transitions are the hardest part about MLA. In other writing formats, all you need is a header. In MLA, you need to make sure that the paragraphs "flow" into one another. Could there be a more vague writing-related word than "flow?" What the crap does that mean? How am I supposed to teach flow? I have found that that is the hardest part about writing. When I was in high school, it was getting to one page, now it is staying on one page. I really wish my stupid phone would stop going off." - Ms. Morey's WTL response. |
