We resumed IR. I collected your IR papers today and handed back your one-pagers.
In the writing section of your notebook, you answered the ten questions on the Monster Debate Worksheet by identifying true or false, and offering a brief explanation. If you were not here for the discussion that followed, you need to provide more explanation. I need a paragraph of reflection for each question. You read the following paragraph in class:
I have a really embarrassing story to tell you. I was on a television game show and I was playing for big money. At exactly the wrong moment, my brain froze. I said something really embarrassing, right in front of twenty million Americans (not to mention my fiancé, who was in the studio audience). Though it happened a long time ago, thinking about it today still causes me embarrassment. You then came up with several questions including: What game show was it? What did you say that was embarassing? How long ago was it? What is big money? Is your finacé now your spouse? Why was it the wrong moment? Etc. You completed a "Question Storm" in which you read through each other's papers and ask any question you had about their content. You didn't focus on form or grammar. I also met with some of you one on one about your papers. The first half of class was spent in the writing lab, finishing up your papers. I started meeting with you one-on-one to discuss your writing process and the work you have done thus far.
We talked about Intro and Conclusion.
The NEVER NEVER NEVER's:
You then drafted your intro and your conclusion in class.
- Review of:
- Ethos, Pathos, Logos - Claim, Evidence, Warrant, Counterclaim -Selecting your topic ppt. -Class Brainstorm for topic ideas. - Argument 4-square for your topic -Complete Slip or Trip - Boy scout
-includes: Evidence/Warrant/Conclusion Chart and Crime Report -You could work with a partner or by yourself, but everyone needs to have the information in their notebook. - Finished our observations about the Tragedy in the Bathroom.
- Completed "conclusion" column in your chart in your notebook - Started writing your crime report by including the following information -When we arrived on scene. - What we found (in detail) - What the witness said - What the autopsy found - Whether the evidence supports what the witness said (warrant) - Counterclaim / Rebuttal - what would Minnie counter with, and how would you rebuttal that counterclaim - Conclusions and/or recommendations We began our Slip or Trip lesson with the Tragedy in the bathroom. I put the picture on the projector and read the narrative associated with it. As a class we decided that Minnie is lying. In your writing section, you divided a page into three columns: evidence, warrant, and conclusion. In the evidence section, identify at least five pieces of evidence that would support the claim that Minnie is lying. Apply a warrant to each piece of evidence, (as a general rule...). Then, in the conclusion section, identify how the evidence + the warrant establish Minnie as a liar.
You went over argumentative writing with a power point. You took notes in the craft section of your notebook. You then discussed warrant. Go over the statements in this worksheet. Write each one in your notebook under craft. Draw a single line under the part of the statement that is the claim and a double line under the evidence. Then give me a warrant that connects the two.
We discussed Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. I gave a powerpoint presentation on the subject and you defined the terms in your literary terms section of your notebook. We went over the specific examples in the powerpoint. You identified whether the appeal was ethos, pathos, or logos and noted your answer in your notebook.
We did WTL #6, and completed the Four-Square argument in your notebooks in the writing section.
Four-Square ArgumentDownload File Today we played the game, Would You Rather... This counted as your WTL #5. You choose one of the two options and on the 'pro' side of your list, wrote why you chose that option. On the 'con' side of your list, you wrote why you didn't pick the other option. You then got into groups and came to a consensus about which of the two options you were going to pick and why. You turned in one sheet with everyone's names on it for participation credit.
You had a sub today, and time to finish your assignment from last time.
8th period is having a hard time allowing me to teach, so we did book-work as an alternative to class discussion. Read the story and answer questions 1-7 at the end, 1/2 page each question.
We added imagery to our notebooks under literary terms. I read the story A Storm in the Mountains and you, with a partner, identified the uses of imagery in the poem. We then re-wrote WTL#4, adding imagery to each sentence.
We finished the story that we started last time. In groups you identified the four aspects of plot in the story and wrote them down in your notebook under "craft."
